Callum Quinn

Teacher of Music

I am an active musician, gigging in Hampshire and West Sussex. As an electric bass and double bass player, gigs can range from party bands at weddings, to church services as part of a chamber orchestra.

I graduated from Leeds College of Music in 2020, having studied jazz for three years. My passion for jazz really comes alive when I can teach and engage with young people. The freedom and creativity that is often built into jazz as a musical genre really provides pupils with plenty of opportunities to explore their talents.

What work experiences led you to the role you are in today?

My experience as an active musician has definitely helped me to provide authentic playing experience for young people, with insight into technique, playing styles, sound production/technology, etc.

Having experienced music college and now being part of a live music scene, I am aware of both the resilience that oneself requires and the support that we must also give to others.

What’s the most exciting project you’re working on right now? What makes it so interesting?

I am hugely excited to start the school orchestra! I can’t wait to provide an authentic performance opportunity for pupils. For me, ensemble playing is the most fun part of playing an instrument. I’m hoping it will be a real eye-opener for pupils.

What do you love most about your job and why?

I love providing pupils with the opportunity to express themselves in a fun and challenging way. Whether it be a small group performance for a novice class or an extra-curricular activity with budding musicians! Every pupil should have the opportunity to explore music.

What is a fun fact no one knows about you?

I love listening to a bit of Avril Lavigne.

Who inspires you and why?

My musical peers inspire me to carry on practising. I feel privileged to play with the people that I get to play with and want to keep improving my playing!

Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies?

I am a big rugby fan! I support Harlequins for club rugby and Scotland for international rugby (because my dad is Scottish).

What single item would you take on a deserted island?

My bass!

What’s your idea of a perfect day?

Playing music with my friends.
