Expeditions and Adventures

Every two or three years, The Royal School embarks on a major overseas expedition organised by a specialist company. Young people are able to visit countries of the world often inaccessible to the ordinary traveller. One of the aims of the expedition is that pupils learn leadership skills and gain project management experience in a situation where they are primarily the architects of their own destiny; they are also responsible for fundraising.  Former expeditions include trips to Ghana, Madagascar, Peru, Tanzania, Zambia/Botswana and Southern India.

On alternate years, the school travels to the mountains for a week of skiing in the Easter break. As well as learning or developing their skiing skills, pupils are able to absorb the local cuisine and culture during the trip.

These expeditions unite two important themes in school life – physical adventurousness and charity work in the wider world.

Duke of Edinburgh

We offer our pupils the opportunity to engage in the award from a young age. Adventure Club and the Year  8 Dartmoor residential trip provides an introductory taster that pave the way for the programmes that run at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels as the pupils' progress through their school lives.

The school recognises the many benefits of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. It encourages pupils to learn new skills, selflessly give their time to others and live a healthy and active life, all of which may well take them out of their comfort zone. Many universities and employers also value the award as it requires young people to develop essential skills for life and work, building their skills and supporting their communities.
