Glen Simmons

Head of Science

I have been head of science and teacher of chemistry at The Royal for five years. Having taught for many years at a grammar school in Lincolnshire, where I led a successful chemistry department, I was looking for my next challenge. The Royal was the perfect fit for academic drive and familial pastoral care, which genuinely enables all pupils to achieve their best. There was no question I wanted to work in such a caring and supportive environment with so many fantastic pupils.

What's the most exciting project you’re working on right now and what makes it so interesting?

We are implementing new schemes of work and planning the use of our new wireless data loggers into our practical activities. We were very lucky to be able to source one between two of our pupils with the data logger motion and dynamic system so these will make a big impact on our pupils' practical skills.

What do you love most about your job and why?

Working with the fantastic young people and being able to play a part in them developing into outstanding future-ready adults. There is nothing in the world like witnessing that “ah ha” moment when you simply know a pupil has grasped the concept they were grappling with!

What is a fun fact no one knows about you?

I once went out for a drink and dance with the band Kazabian before anyone knew who they were!

Who inspires you?

Jim Al-Khalili, Brian Cox and David Attenborough

Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies?

I am a great painter of models for war games but I am not sure it is a hidden talent!

What single item would you take on a deserted island?

I’d take my dog, Clyde.

What’s your idea of a perfect day?

Walk the dog, relax with a cider over a nice meal, walk a bit more and chill out with some model painting or a book.
