Senior School Admissions

We always recommend visiting us in person and suggest attending an open day before returning for an individual meeting with Mrs Pippa Smithson, Head, and a tour of the school. Seeing the senior school ‘in action’ gives you the opportunity to observe the interaction between pupils and staff and to get a feel for The Royal’s affirmative approach to education.

Our main entry points are at Year 7, Year 9 and Year 12. We encourage those who are considering a Year 9 entry to complete the entrance assessments for Year 7 and defer – nearer the point of entry we will invite the applicant for an informal interview with the Head of Upper School and to supply school reports from Year 7 and Year 8.

ENTRANCE ASSESSMENTS

The Year 7 assessment day takes place in early January of the year of entry. The assessment day is part of the admissions process and helps us to assess their ability to fit into The Royal School community.

Academic assessments are The Royal School's own 11+ written assessments in English and Mathematics, as well as a computer-based assessment that assesses four key areas which research shows are linked to later academic outcomes:

  • Vocabulary – word fluency and understanding
  • Mathematics – logical thinking, manipulating numbers and numerical concepts
  • Non-verbal ability – recognising shapes, matching patterns, applying spatial awareness and visual intuition
  • Skills - such as proofreading, perceptual speed and accuracy

In English and Mathematics the assessments are based on the National Curriculum work that the pupils will have been doing in their current school.  No special tutoring is required beyond this.

In addition to the tests, all pupils will have a friendly, informal interview with a member of staff.

Pupils will also take part in a number of individual and group activities to allow us to assess their creativity and how they work with other children.  No preparation for these activities is required.

Please contact our admissions team on 01428 603052 for further information regarding the admission process.

PREVIEW DAY

All pupils registered for Year 7 2021 and Year 9 2023 entry will be invited to attend our Preview Day on Thursday 26 November 2020. This gives applicants the opportunity to experience a day in the life of The Royal School and to start forming friendships with potential future classmates.  Preview Day is a fun and relaxed way for prospective pupils to get to know us and The Royal – they will take part in a variety of activities, including the opportunity to interact and ask questions of some current pupils.
