Scholarships & Bursaries

Our Approach to Achievement

All pupils at The Royal School thrive through an academically ambitious  curriculum dedicated to ensuring each individual strives to achieve their very best. Powerful enrichment opportunities both in and beyond the classroom enable our highest achievers, across all disciplines, to explore their strengths and talents to a deeper level. Being future ready signifies something different for each pupil as they embark upon their Royal School journey.  Relationships are paramount: through our knowledge of the pupils  we make sure that we offer a robust scholarship programme that recognises each scholar and in turn enables them to flourish.

Overview of Scholarships

Academic, Art, Music, Performance and Sports Scholarships are awarded to pupils who enter the school in Years 7, 9 and 12.

The Scholarship Programme at The Royal School is a fantastic opportunity for those who excel academically or possess exceptional talent and potential in a particular discipline to develop their skills and passions whilst making a powerful contribution to our vibrant and forward looking school.

We understand the importance of treating every scholar as an individual and instead of a ‘one size fits all’ programme, ours is tailored to bring out the best in everyone and ensure they progress and thrive. Each scholar is paired with a staff mentor to ensure their continual development and support throughout their time at The Royal.  They will have regular one-to-one meetings to set targets, review and make the most of the opportunities on offer.

Our scholars are role models within the school and set an example for others in their conduct and attitude.  They play an active role in life at The Royal, upholding our values and ethos and acting as ambassadors for the school.

There is fee remission attached to all of our scholarships. Candidates who are successful in gaining a scholarship but who require a greater remission in fees in order to take up their place may apply for a means-tested bursary.

Application Process

In order to apply for any scholarship, potential candidates need to have registered and paid a registration fee (unless joining us directly from The Royal Prep School).

Potential candidates can apply at the time of registration and Royal Prep School pupils can apply via a separate letter which is sent out to parents.

Applicants for Year 7 and 9 entry scholarships are invited to a scholars’ interview and assessment in November/December (before the year of entry) with information provided in advance about exact requirements and expectations for the day.

Sixth Form applicants are invited to attend the scholarship selection process in November.

Bursaries

Bursaries enable pupils to attend the school whose parents might not otherwise be able to afford the fees. Applications are invited at Year 7 and Year 12 entry only (Year 9 entry in exceptional circumstances) and awards take into account both parents’ income and assets.  We do not offer full bursaries and parents are expected to make a contribution to the fees. Bursary applications for combined incomes over £70,000 may not be considered.

Bursaries are made available by United Learning and by The Kilmorey Fund and are subject to eligibility criteria and terms and conditions.

It is important to note that the School only has a limited amount of funds to be able to dedicate to financial assistance in any one year and therefore, even though you may qualify for bursary, there is no guarantee that a bursary will be awarded, or that we will be able to award the level of financial assistance required in order to be able to afford the school fees.

Bursaries are reviewed on an annual basis and the level of assistance is adjusted according to changes in your financial circumstances.

Parents/guardians seeking a Bursary are required to complete an application form to establish the financial circumstances of the household and will be visited at home by United Learning’s Assessment provider, Bursary Administration Ltd. It is during this visit they will ask to see the original documentation referred to in the application form. BAL are a specialist company who operate across the UK, working alongside a large number of Independent Schools.

Please note that Bursaries are only available in the minority of the most deserving cases and no assumption should be made that financial assistance can or will be given.
