Little Sailors is divided into four age groups - our youngest children join Optimists and stay in that age group until they move up to Nippers in the academic year in which they turn 2 years old, progressing through, each September, to Toppers and Lasers. The groups are named after sailing dinghies!
There is some fluidity of movement between Toppers and Lasers to ensure that children progress through the Early Years Foundation Scheme at a rate appropriate to their development.
Optimists and Nippers classes in Little Sailors are available to children from 6 weeks - 2 years and open from 08.00* – 18.00 for 51 weeks of the year. * A small number of places are available for 7.30am starts. These classes are currently full, further spaces will become available in the new academic year commencing September 2021.
Toppers and Lasers classes for children aged 2-4 years are open during term-time from 08.30 – 15.30. Nursery children whose parents need to drop off at 08.00 and collect at 18.00 may request ‘wraparound care’. In addition, a small number of places are available for 7.30am starts; please contact Admissions for more information. Childcare is available during the school holidays, space permitting.
Sessions are agreed at the point of entry; an academic term’s notice is required of any reduction or cessation in sessions. An increase in sessions will be accommodated immediately – space permitting.
Applications are not restricted to September entry but it is not uncommon for a waiting list to operate when the demand for places exceeds supply. Sessions are agreed at the point of entry. An increase in sessions will be accommodated immediately – space permitting.
A non-refundable fee of £100 must be paid to register a child’s interest in the school and, if necessary, to secure a place on the waiting list. Priority on the waiting list will go to registered children who have committed to join The Royal School's Reception class.
Once space becomes available, children are invited to take part in two or three free familiarisation sessions prior to a formal offer of a place to ensure that they are happy in Little Sailors and that the school is able to meet their needs.

LITTLE SAILORS NURSERY TO RECEPTION TRANSFER
Children move into Comets (The Royal Prep School Reception class) in the academic year in which they turn 5 years old. The Nursery Manager and the children’s keyworkers work closely with the Reception Class teacher to ensure a seamless transition. Many specialist lessons offered in the Prep School – French, PE, dance, outdoor learning – are introduced in Little Sailors Nursery.
