LOWER SIXTH HEAR LORD HESELTINE SPEAK

On Wednesday, 27th January, Mrs Darvill took four Lower Sixth students to hear Lord Heseltine speak at Winchester College. Lord Heseltine is well known for his many positions in the Cabinet and his leadership challenge which led to the removal of Margaret Thatcher as Prime Minister who, at that time, was the leader of the Conservative party. Lord Heseltine never became the leader of the Conservative party but he did become deputy Prime Minister. Lord Heseltine talked to us about his life and how his up-bringing during the Second World War affected his attitude to life. His talked about immigration and the dilemma of an over-populated Britain and concluded that services would run out if Britain continued to have a high population. He discussed the take over of Hong Kong by China and how Hong Kong was able to keep its trade separate from the Chinese as long as they moved certain factories to mainland China. He also discussed how politics affects trade between two countries, the break down of the Empire, and how this affected the lives of the people in the UK. When he was still within the Conservative party he strongly believed that socialism would take over the world, which never happened. In his opinion Britain had to join the European Union because Britain could never have a secure partnership with the United States of America and the UK needed to be linked to another great power. During the lecture he spoke of many issues, which he was then questioned upon by the audience. It was a very interesting talk which we all enjoyed. Report by Holly Downing, L6.
