The Royal School’s House system is designed to provide pupils with a group identity distinct from their form identity: the Houses encourage pupils to mix with older and younger children, rather than simply those within their year.  The House system provides pupils with an opportunity to become involved in a wide range of activities including music, drama, fundraising for local and national/international charities, inter-House debates and sporting events.

New pupils are allocated to one of four Houses when they join The Royal School and remain in their Houses for the duration of their time at School.  Junior School children stay in the same Houses when transferring to the Senior School.  The four Houses are named after the Royal households: Balmoral, Buckingham, Sandringham and Windsor.  Siblings are normally allocated to the same House. 

At the Junior School, staff select House Captains from Prep 6.  At the Senior School, House Captains are  voted into office for one year by staff and pupils.  House Captains at both Junior and Senior Schools organise events and activities in close consultation with members of the academic staff (who are also allocated to each House).

All children are encouraged to play an active part in House activities as this is considered to be an important part of their education at the School.  They are given the opportunity to develop leadership and teamwork skills in a variety of different ways from leading sports teams to arranging and managing major inter-House events.  We actively encourage pupils to use their own initiative in devising new and interesting activities in order to maintain the Houses as a flourishing part of School life.

At the Junior School, House assemblies take place at least once per term and House Points are totalled each week in assembly.  House points are awarded at sporting events such as the swimming gala; pupils are also given House points for good work.  The Junior School’s House Shield is awarded to the House with the most House points at the end of each academic year.

At the Senior School, House assemblies and meetings take place on alternate Fridays and are led by the House Captains.  During the term, pupils are awarded merits or excellents for good/outstanding work.  These count as 1 or 3 points towards their House’s end of term total. At the end of term all points are totalled and the average points per girl per House are calculated.  The House with the highest average wins the House Cup for the term.
