Mr Ian Senior, BA (Hons), PGCE

HEAD OF SIXTH FORM & DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

As a member of Nelson House, you will have greater freedom and independence but you will also receive a highly individualised programme designed to develop and prepare you for life; Nelson House is a bridge between school, university and the world of work and I consider it a privilege, along with my team, to be entrusted with shaping your future.

The results that students achieve speak for themselves: over 90% A* - C in the last three years and almost half the grades gained by Upper Sixth leavers in 2012 were A* - A grades. Over half our students gained places at Russell Group or 1994 universities. A programme of specialist preparation is given to students applying to Oxford or Cambridge or other highly competitive universities or courses such as Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science. This includes identification of relevant taster courses and events or summer schools, subject specific talks, discussion groups, interview preparation and practice with staff and external experts, support in obtaining relevant work experience as well as detailed advice and guidance on the application process. Additional academic guidance is also given to prepare for relevant admissions tests.

Achieving a place at university is not necessarily an automatic aim, however, and we will encourage you to do what is right for you; an internship in a London fashion house, business college and working in an orphanage in South Africa are examples from last year of very worth alternatives to university. Careers and guidance is an integral part of the Nelson House Plus programme which provides skills for life including cultural, social, political and recreational opportunities as well as careers advice.

For more information about Nelson House privileges, leadership and mentoring responsibilities and extra-curricular activities as well as the entry process for The Royal School’s Sixth Form, please download the Nelson House brochure.

Whatever you want to be, wherever you want to go, our aim is to support you and ensure that your decisions and choices are realistic and right for you.

The Admissions Coordinators are on hand to guide you through the admissions process. Please contact them at any time by email via admissions@royal-school.org or by telephone on 01428 603052.
